Maggie Mercier is originally from Montreal, Canada and her journey with Major Voices began in 2017 in South Africa. What started as a brief collaboration for her studies quickly grew into a deep and lasting friendship built on trust, respect, and shared growth. Over the years, she got to live with them in their community and became closely connected to their daily lives, witnessing both their struggles and their profound will to transform their lives through music. From this bond emerged a strong creative partnership that continues to this day, where their artistic paths have grown side by side.
After the covid pandemic, Maggie decided to start with the group a feature length documentary. Rather than filming about Major Voices, she chose to make the documentary with them. Amanene Beyond Voices was created through an intimate, collaborative process, filmed without a traditional crew. Working alone alongside the group, Maggie handled the filming, sound, and directing herself, allowing the camera to remain unobtrusive and natural. This approach made space for honesty, vulnerability, and authenticity — moments that could only emerge through time, trust, and presence.
The film documents more than a musical journey. It captures brotherhood, resilience and hope, as Major Voices carve a new path for themselves and their community. The documentary stands as a testament to the power of music to change lives, and to what can emerge when storytelling is rooted in respect and human connection.
